Best-Dressed @ 88th Oscars 2016

I am happy that Leo won the Best Actor and all (hence the sort-of unrelated cover photo but can’t help it!), but I’m happier when these ladies turned up looking like the owned a piece of Oscars on the red carpet.

Red carpet styling is always a tricky piece of work, too much or too little will never work, though sometimes Less Is More, but no one wants to end up looking like a plain dish. It is all about balance. Talk is cheap, getting it right is pretty hard.

#1 Warrior Princess in Modern Day: Rooney Mara

Rooney Mara has been making some wise choices recently, and the stylist has been banging on her high cheekbone and strong personality, giving her some cool pieces to go with them. This Givenchy number is soft, the off white and full lace speaks of pureness, yet the cut is slightly revealing. Thank God it is not the usual plunging neckline. Almost free of accessories – any kind of diamond would have spoilt the look. Imagine an ancient princess in modern-day. It has a strong story going on here.

#2 Still Rocking Old Hollywood Glam Perfectly: Lady Gaga

We know she plays well in every character she dressed as, and this Old Hollywood Glam still works like a charm on her. Perhaps it is in her blood or she genuine likes it. Again here shape takes centre stage and besides a pair of earring and a rock there is nothing else. Pantsuits is nothing new on red carpet, but with a deep décolletage and firm white palette, it is not your usual pluck-and-play. Not to mention her usually on-point make-up and hair to seal the deal.

#3 Innocent Blue Fairy: Brie Larson

The most beautiful part about this dress is the cut and fit, it enhances Brie Larson’s perfect silhouette in a decent way, where the front opening is deep yet looking totally innocent . The top sheer piece is they key. The easy pleats is everything. It is light and breezy, completely in sync with Brie Larson’s personality (or at least it looks that way). Proof that sometimes you don’t need a train to attract attention. Most crazy about? The center parting sleek hairdo.

#4 Golden Mermaid: Margot Robbie

When a blonde does gold that matches her hair colour (almost), it can either go YAY or NAY. Ms. Margot Robbie has clearly gotten the YAY. She looks like an exotic golden mermaid in the Tom Ford dress. Square shoulder and low front slit works perfectly together, and the gold squama just got it up a notch. The most ingenious pairing is none other than the black clutch with a long tassel, it looks like part of the dress from every possible angle. Almost perfect.

#5 Midnight Glory: Saoirse Ronan

Another example of perfect fit with simple cut that brings out the best of the person who is wearing it. This dark olive-green, (or is it pine green?) is so sexy, especially on a fair maiden like Ronan, it needs no further explanation. But as it is for the red carpet of The Academy Award, Calvin Klein team decided to put on an extra sheer look from waist down. The dress has a tsunami wave going on at the bottom, swirling us all into peeping on Saoirse Ronan’s legs. The heavy eye make-up is doable when one carries on a dress as sexy as this, while the loose let-down hair style is definitely a plus point.
