FASHION STORY: KAREN WALKER, SS15, NYFW

Here at where I live, not everyone understand Karen Walker. You have to be polished to the nine to be considered fashionable. But I’m glad now we have more local designers and fashion people pushing the boundaries and allowing fashion to be a form of expression.

Many years back we started with Karen Walker as our featured designer in the store, she was yet to venture into NYFW then. But already we know she is going to make it; she is going to attract a group of liked minded people who truly floored by her ingenuity. True enough the brand did not do well in our store; with that price-point,  people are expecting silk-like fabric that makes them feel a million bucks or a dress that can take them to wedding dinner (but instead made from cheap poly).

I am a big Karen Walker fan. My admiration does not come from the point-of-view where I can wear every single thing in her collection (in fact far from it), but instead, it comes from the liking of her placement and how she pushes off the limitation in dressing. I supposed everyone secretly belong to a certain cult group, and I’m in her camp – where secretly we hope to blur the line between good and bad. Most importantly, we don’t want to let the dressing defined who we are.

I am convinced Karen Walker knows how to interpret and execute a theme well. Garden People collection has the most down-to-earth dressing of a summer day, ready to be out and enjoy the sun in the garden. Yet her down-to-earth styling is most unusual and bold.

Clearly knowing her path, this collection pairs floral with everything; vivid colours, rich hues for garden people! We see loose-fit shorts, relaxed tops, classic denim pieces and a strong range of accessories. The bags and shoes are note-worthy, adding to the already successful eyewear and jewelry collection.

Colour combo to try

Comfortable and loose-fit have always been a big part of Karen Walker’s work, though occasionally we have form-fitting dresses and pants to complement a different mood. I don’t think it bothers her much, because ultimately she is sticking to her way.

We used to describe her design as quirky, but I strongly believe the Karen Walker brand is much more than that. Yes it is indeed quirky and fun, with exciting elements every season. But let’s not forget that it is visionary brand that stays true to its core of functional fashion that far away from the rest.

Today, I am still living in her cotton dresses and twill tops from 2006. There is a strong sense of realness in her clothes.  Quality materials, individualist design combined with genuine workmanship is the fundamental of the Karen Walker brand.
