Jazz>。

Music Review: Yoga Lin <Jazz Channel>

This is a live recording done 2 years ago, at a charity event done by Yoga Lin. To me, it is amazing to hear young Taiwanese artist to go into jazz the way he does.

Not entirely mainstream and trying to please the majority, Lin sings jazz the way he understands it, not the way the music executives think he should. Many young artists try to lay their hands on jazz, but some are trying too hard to pretend to be jazzy, but I guess that is not the point. Some got the arrangement tight and nice, but I feel no soul in the songs. Ultimately I think jazz is like rock&roll, either you have it, or you don’t, or it has to be cultivated for a long time.

The recording quality of this album is pretty good, especially if you take it to a proper hifi system to have a go. Mine is a Taiwan pressed, I’m not sure about the local version. For me, I like jazz tunes for its story telling. This generally comes from the instrument arrangement, and the mood these guys playing together. Lin’s Jazz Channel got it nicely.

<I Can’t Make You Love Me>, <No Surprises> and few Chinese tunes are my favourite. The rest are pretty good, making the album worth buying as a whole.
